Ski Resorts Most people who buy in ski resorts are also skiers or boarders and have a love of the mountains, but there is also room for developers and long term investors who recognise that there is added security in building somewhere that has a specific reason for people to buy. There is also room for those who don’t ski but simply love being in the mountains as there is much more on offer here than simply skiing. Indeed a benefit that many people neglect when they purchase in ski resorts is the summer, which is glorious. From late April, when the colour starts to creep back into the landscape, through to the incredible spectacle of the golden forests in autumn set against the backdrop of snow capped mountains, there is something to enjoy, to appreciate. Most of the resorts are open for two months over July and August and so there are a myriad of activities to try from riding to paragliding to summer skiing to yoga and painting classes. Or simply walk on the well marked footpaths and take in the full spectacle of this beautiful region. With so many different ski resorts there will be something for every taste and every budget. The types of properties are very varied; you have everything from the tiny studio apartments designed solely with keen skiers in mind who will be up and out at the crack of dawn and simply want a place to rest their heads; through to the uber luxury chalets with wellness centres, home cinemas, staff quarters and heated driveways ; here the owners want to combine their favourite leisure pursuit with luxury living and will be whisked around by helicopter or chauffer driven 4x4. For most of us the middle ground is a wide range of apartments, chalets and village houses. These come in all shapes and sizes but taking into account the cold winters most tend to be designed with warmth in mind with open fireplaces or wood burners and a cosy, cottage style finish. In most areas properties are built or finished in stone and wood giving a warm and traditional feel. Just down the road from most of the ski resorts are tiny villages and hamlets that provide a cheaper option, here properties can be brought at a fraction of the price than those in the resorts just 5 or 10 minutes drive away. With exceptional views, lots of sunshine, rivers and lakes, gorges and mountains all ski resorts and their surrounding areas are also places of exceptional beauty and indeed there are many national parks based around the Alps. Throughout you will find barns, tiny village houses, farms and many properties with history and character perched on the edge of enormous views or crammed into the centre of the tiny village streets that are still better suited to a horse and cart rather than a large 4x4. When you buy in the mountains, in some areas and particularly in the resorts there are also commercial possibilities; you can rent through the many rental agencies available or perhaps rent to a tour operator then book your own holiday with them at a discounted price and your chalet will come fully staffed! Of course many people simply buy as a home from home to enjoy with their friends and family, but with skiing and mountains just outside the door. Throughout the Alps the local people are full of character and flavour as are their local produce, there is a wealth of culture, food and wine to appreciate and enjoy and a great love of art and music. All this, alongside the state of the art ski resorts in which the French have invested so heavily to bring tourism and commerce to the mountains, adds up to something very special.
