| | Toby Hawkins, Independent Agent, says: | A wonderfully isolated setting, far from the nearest neighbour surrounded by your own land. Once a Marquis’ fiefdom with its own coat of arms, this would make an ideal place for a rural retreat, riding stables, holiday gîte or a goat or sheep farm. There is an old mill ready to be converted; a huge stone barn, numerous outbuildings, a wooded valley with a stream and pond and a little house ideal for an artist’s studio. Add to this the orchard, woods and farmland and this is a very special and sophisticated country property in stunning rolling countryside near Poitiers and Chatellerault.
| The main house dates from 16th century with exposed stone walls and wisteria climbing around the front door.
The large drawing room has a stone open fireplace ready for roaring winter fires. The floor has original tiles and the beams are exposed. The study has a dramatic stone fireplace and a window overlooking the valley to the front. Going through to the sitting room you enter the 17th century part of the house. This room has sunshine streaming in through the large window, with tiled floor and a french door to the back garden. The dining room connects to the sitting room through an archway. Beyond this, the kitchen has built in units and large storage cupboards.
Upstairs there is a vast bedroom above the drawing room, with an immense Bourbon fireplace and an en-suite bathroom. Two further bedrooms and a bathroom are at the other end of the house with a separate staircase from the dining room. There are two cellars; one a boiler room and the other a large wine cellar.
Heading away from the house, the first building is the bread oven, reported to be in working order, but not tested.
From here you go on to the Ancien Moulin dating from 15th century. This mill has a renovated roof, water and electricity, though the building does need full refurbishment. An extremely impressive building which would make an enormous gîte with fantastic stone fireplaces. There is a bricked up secret tunnel, though nobody knows where this leads. Intrepid explorers required to discover the secret.
Opposite the mill is the enormous shepherd’s barn, dating from mid 1800s but extended in 1880. A stone built high barn, 12m x 8m with good stone walls and renovated roof with stunning original beams.
The stables, too, are in good condition and have a hay loft above. Other outbuildings include a workshop, tractor shed, open stable, open wood store and mower shed.
Hidden at the back of all these buildings, beside the orchard, is a little house which has been partially renovated to make a glass fronted artist’s studio.
There is a lawned courtyard behind the house and further lawns and kitchen garden. Around the courtyard are a line of 4 sheds, each the size of a garage and all with an attic above.
The valley has wild boar, deer and all manner of wildlife since this is an area of no hunting and is totally private without any public footpaths or rights of way across the land.
Here you are lord of your own domain.
