| | Neil Harris, Independent Agent, says: | | Pretty little cottage on the hillside above the port in Port-vendres with a shady terrace and a view of the port. Only two minutes on foot from the port itself with its portside shops and cafés, this would make an ideal holiday cottage with good rental potential. Within a short drive of the sandy beach at le Racou, there are also smaller rocky beaches in the vicinity. | This tastefully renovated cottage would be perfect as a holiday cottage – in perfect order it is ready to move into with no further work. With two bedrooms it would be comfortable for 4 people, but could sleep more.
The entrance, from the quiet back street, is via a shady terrace planted with bushes for privacy. There is a large sitting/dining room that goes right through and has French doors to a balcony at the other side, where there is a view over the rooftops towards the port. There is a corner kitchen with a bar and steps leading to a mezzanine double bedroom.
Stairs go down to the next floor which is the first floor at the back due to the slope of the hill. There is a large bedroom with fitted wardrobes, a bathroom with bath, separate shower cubicle and hand basin, and a separate WC.
Port Vendres is a working port with a lovely friendly feel. Although a little less picturesque than its near neighbour Collioures, it is also less developed for tourists, while having its share of portside cafés and small shops. Fishing boats line the quays and fresh fish can be bought directly on the portside or in several excellent fishmongers at the far end of the port. The town itself rises up from the port towards the foothills of the Albères whose lower slopes are covered in vines.
Collioures, just over the cliffs northward, is a picturesque port with a fort on the seafront, a small beach and lots of little backstreets full of galleries and boutiques as well as a good weekly market.
Beyond the town, toward the Spanish border is cap Béar, which is a nature reserve with a coast path around it giving access to a number of small coves. Beyond the cap there are sandy beaches although the best sandy beaches are towards Argelés at le Racou.and Argelés Plage
From the edge of the town, a fast road takes you along the coast past Collioures and Argelés, towards Perpignan, the departmental capital where there are excellent shops and several big commercial centres as well as all the various administrative departmental offices.
The access to the A9 motorway is via Le Boulou which is on the edge of the plain and the start of the Pyrenean foothills. The Pyrenées here are accessible all year round due to the mild climate and there are many possibilities for hiking here as well as in the Albères hills closer to the coast.
